Behavioural change in relation to the transition away from gas

In view of the problems with our natural gas exploitation in the province of Groningen (causing earthquakes and societal resistance against further gas extraction), the Dutch government aims to support municipalities in their efforts to transition neighbourhoods away from natural gas (for heating and cooking). This transition will ask for changes at the level of the individual households, but also at the neighbourhood level. The Ministry of Interior and Kingdom Relations asked Duneworks in 2019 to perform a study on the behavioural issues in relation to the transition away from gas. We investigated how existing social practices at household level are likely to be affected and the sort of questions and challenges this may bring up. Since the options to replace natural gas are not all mature, it is crucial to find out together with residents which challenges and opportunities are relevant for their particular home and neighbourhood. The study has resulted in recommendations for municipalities and their partners as well as a roadmap. In Dutch language only
