Sustainability? What for?
Our society faces many challenges in many areas, from energy, mobility to water management and the food chain.
These challenges are structural and varied. To make matters more complex all these challenges are interrelated.
To tackle these challenges in a sustainable manner changes are necessary: transitions. These changes need to occur not only in the technological dimension, but also behavior, knowledge, laws and regulation, institutions, culture and norms and values need to change.
Such a major change cannot be realised immediately but needs to be handled as a transition of many years. Sustainability often starts on a smaller scale, and often in the form of small projects or processes on the local, organisational or community level. Both forms need to be treasured.
Transitions ask for long-term major efforts and commitment of authorities, enterprises, industry, CSO's, NGO's, knowledge and research institutes and citizens. Intimate cooperation between all these stakeholders is essential.
Although sustainable transitions start with practical innovative sustainability projects, it is key to think carefully about their role and place in the bigger effort and goal. To effectively asses that role, future visions and roadmaps are necessary that can count on societal acceptance.
